Not many couch potatoes here: City is No. 1 in fitness By DAVE PHILIPPS
February 7, 2008

After years in the running (and running and running and running), Colorado Springs has won the title of fittest city in America for 2008 from Men’s Fitness magazine.

The sunny town with miles of trails, the Olympic Training Center and an unusually trim waistline has been near the front of the pack for years, ranking No. 3 behind Albuquerque and Seattle in 2007, and No. 6 in 2006.

Has the city been collectively gulping raw eggs and sparring with sides of beef to reach the top spot? Hardly. The magazine praised the city for the Trails, Opens Space and Parks tax which made places like Red Rock Canyon Open Space possible, easy access to the mountains, sunny weather and the population’s zeal for taking advantage of them all.

The label of fattest city goes to Las Vegas.

The process for awarding the title is hardly scientific. It is based on a statistical survey of everything from weather patterns to traffic patterns and the abundance of open space to the abundance of fast food joints (for a complete list, go to mensfitness.com). In 2006, the honor of fittest city went to Baltimore, which made that city’s residents spit out their Utz potato chips and say “You gotta be kidding.”

Still, you can’t deny Colorado Spring has certain fitness Nazi tendencies. Where else does a weekly running club like Jack Quinn’s attract hundreds on a frigid Tuesday night? Where else does the chance to pay $85 to run up Pikes Peak sell out in 9 minutes? Where else is the most widespread civil disobedience act trespassing up the 2,500 steps of the Mount Manitou incline?

And the city better keep at it, because Denver was ranked No. 4 this year. And it may try to make a move.

USA CYCLING ANNOUNCES PLANS TO REMAIN IN COLORADO SPRINGS
By editor from Bicycle.net

National Governing Body Secures Office Building on City’s North
Side

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. (May 7, 2008) - USA Cycling announced
today that the national headquarters for competitive cycling in the United States will remain in Colorado Springs.

Thanks to the generous support of Nor’wood Development group and the El Pomar Foundation combined with the collective efforts of the City of Colorado Springs and several local organizations including the Colorado Springs Economic Development Corporation and the Colorado Springs Sports
Corporation, USA Cycling has secured new office space on the city’s north side. The decision to remain in Colorado Springs comes despite considerable interest from several communities throughout the United States to attract USA Cycling’s headquarters.

The new headquarters for USA Cycling will occupy a 26,000-square-foot building on nearly two acres of land near I-25 on the northwest side of Colorado Springs. Plans include a conference center, education and training facilities, and office facilities for more than 60 employees. The building and the land on which it sits were donated to USA Cycling by Nor’wood, while additional support from the El Pomar Foundation and the Colorado Springs Economic Development Corporation played a major role in keeping USA Cycling’s headquarters in Colorado Springs.

“Without the contributions of so many generous individuals and organizations from within the local community, it’s likely that USA Cycling would not have remained in Colorado,” commented Steve Johnson, CEO of USA Cycling.

“The support of the Colorado Springs community has been incredible throughout the process, and Nor’wood’s donation, which served as the foundation for this project, is a remarkable gesture for which we are extremely grateful. The interest in USA Cycling shown by communities throughout the United States has been overwhelming, but in the end we are very pleased that we will continue to call Colorado Springs home for many years to come. I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone involved for their tireless efforts that have made this decision possible.”

“We’re delighted that USA Cycling will continue to call Colorado Springs home,” commented Chris Jenkins, Vice President of Nor’wood. “Our culture, climate and natural environment provide an ideal venue for them to fulfill their mission, and they are a tremendous asset to have right here in
our community.”

Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera was a major proponent for keeping USA Cycling in a city known around the country as a hotbed for amateur athletics.

Fishing & Boating

Colorado offers many fishing opportunities with its rivers, mountain streams, reservoirs and warm-water lakes. For complete information about licenses and fishing regulations, contact:

Wildlife Division Office
4255 Sinton Road, 227-5200

Eleven Mile Reservoir:
Located 50 miles west of Colorado Springs off Highway 24 near Lake
George. Offers good, early season fishing for rainbow, Kokanee and brown
trout. Provides possibly the best fishing in the state for northern pike, with
peak action usually in June.

Spinney Mountain Reservoir:
Just west of Eleven Mile Reservoir, this reservoir should have great rainbow
trout fishing through 2007. Northern pike is good for those on the smaller side
and anglers are encouraged to harvest all the pike that are caught.

Antero Reservoir:
Off Highway 24, west of Hartsel. This reservoir is stocked with brown rainbow,
brook and cutthroat trout. Due to fluctuating water levels it is advisable to
call ahead since there are times when it has closed.

Tarryall Reservoir:
Located off dirt road north of Lake George. Offers bait and lure fishing for
rainbows in a beautiful setting. Nothern pike are increasing and there are occasional large brown trout.

Rampart Recreation Area:
Part of the Colorado Springs watershed, just off Rampart Range Road northeast of Woodland Park. Rampart and Nichols reservoirs offer fishing for rainbow trout, success depends on some stocking by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Boat ramp access May to early October.

Skaguay Reservoir:
Six miles east of Victor. The lake will be full this year (2007). Catchable
trout will be stocked throughout the summer and there is no limit on northern
pike. Boat ramp, parking and restrooms. Note: Beaver Creek, below the
Reservoir has brown trout fishing for the stream enthusiast.

Pueblo Reservoir:
Just west of Pueblo. The reservoir is a fluctuating impoundment of the
Arkansas River. One of the best warm-water fisheries in the state; large- and
smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie and wipers, along with rainbow trout until
midsummer. Among the best catfish waters in spring.

Brush Hollow Reservoir:
Northwest of Penrose, off Highway 115. The reservoir is drawn down for
irrigation by early June but spring fishing for trout, blue gill, sunfish, catfish
and perch is very popular and walleye and largemouth bass populations look
good for the summer.

Monument Reservoir:
Off Highway 12 east of the town of Monument Park. The reservoir is expected
to be very good in 2007. Catchable brown and rainbow trout and smallmouth
bass are abundant.

Arkansas River:
Reached from Canon City or Buena Vista, of fers fly and lure fishing for
brown trout. The river has one of the highest trout densities in Colorado.

South Platte River:
Near Deckers the river provides trophy fishing for rainbows and large
browns. An excellent stream for fly fish ing. The river in Cheesman Canyon is
open to flies and lures only.
